In the world of protecting and saving the environment we often hear about carbon gases pollution, waste water pollution. Yet we never hear much about one of the more devastating culprits, thermal pollution. Thermal pollution is brought about by waste heat. It can have lots of effect on water, it gets the water unnecessarily warm. When water gets warm in this manner, its course is affected and several other things can go wrong.

When water gets warm, it can affect aquatic lives negatively. The fish are in need of oxygen for gas exchange. The oxygen is naturally dissolved in water before the aquatic lives can take it up. But when the water is warm, it becomes rather difficult for oxygen to dissolve into water and aquatic lives are negatively affected since they can’t breathe.
This change in environment due to thermal pollution of water can also make the animal consume more food. This is due to increase in enzyme activities in the body. The increase leads to increase in metabolic rate of the aquatic lives. Food shortage is sure in this situation and mass death may end up being the final situation.
Migration is also affected by thermal pollution of the environment. Organisms tend to migrate from the uncomfortable environmental condition to a more comfortable one. It is similar to hr persons who at one point declared about a new software, this hr software rocks, only to move away from it when a new one comes out. When organisms move towards the comfortable environment, that area becomes over populated. Competition will be rife and mass death may be the final outcome.
Keeping in mind the fact that we are a part of an ecosystem anything that affects one area of the system will affect the others sooner or later. So thermal pollution is just as devastating on the environment as other main types of pollution.
